Western Australia Pharmacies Expand Community Role

In a significant move towards enhancing healthcare access, eligible community pharmacists across the state will begin accredited training for the Enhanced Access Community Pharmacy Pilot (EACPP).

Applications are now open for eligible community pharmacists to enrol in accredited Graduate Certificate programs, with training to begin in September 2025.

The pilot will enable appropriately trained and authorised participating pharmacists to assess, manage, and treat a range of conditions such as musculoskeletal pain and inflammation, nausea and vomiting, and wound care – delivering more timely, accessible, and community-based care across WA.

The EACPP builds on the success of previous pharmacist-led healthcare initiatives, such as the Pharmacist immunisation in WA, Treatment of urinary tract infection (UTIs) by pharmacists and Resupply of oral contraceptive pills (OCPs) by pharmacists, and intends to supplement, not replace, existing primary care services and to give consumers more choice.

Service delivery is expected to commence by 2027, following the completion of pharmacist postgraduate training and finalisation of regulatory amendments. The pilot is anticipated to continue until 2028.
