Western Australian Housing Completions Continue To Gather Pace

The number of new homes built in Western Australia grew by 25.1 per cent to 22,602 in the 2024-25 financial year - showing the strongest growth in the nation.

Home completions reached the highest number in eight years, according to Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) data released today.

Western Australia showed the strongest growth in the nation in the number of new homes built, while nationally, completions fell by 2 per cent.

The number of homes under construction rose to 23,063 by 30 June 2025, as the number of homes commenced surpassed the number of homes completed during the quarter.

The number of dwellings commenced rose to 6,088 for the June quarter - up 11.5 per cent - indicating continued momentum in growth in housing supply in line with other leading indicators such as building approvals which reached 23,130 over the year to August.

The new data shows the Cook Government's broad range of measures to boost supply are working, including investing in housing enabling infrastructure, delivering planning reforms, investing in social and affordable housing, incentives to boost rental supply and growing the construction workforce.

The size of the construction industry workforce is close to its record level achieved in the year to February 2025, averaging over 155,000 over the year to August 2025, enabling more homes to be built across the State.

It comes after Cook Government recently launched its $210 million Urban Connect Shared Equity scheme for new apartments and townhouses to support more Western Australians into their own home and to boost housing supply.

As stated by Premier Roger Cook:

"Western Australia's growing population means our State has a very high demand for housing.

"That's why it's really pleasing to see an uplift in building completions in the year to June, getting us closer to our target set with the Commonwealth Government to build 25,000 homes a year.

"The capacity of our housing construction industry is increasing, and with our growing workforce and more land supply coming online, it's really encouraging to see this uplift in completions."

As stated by Treasurer Rita Saffioti:

"Western Australia is leading the nation in housing completions with the number of new homes built in the last financial year reaching the highest levels seen in eight years.

"Our government is focused on ensuring every Western Australian has access to a quality home and this data shows our efforts are working.

"We're cutting red tape, boosting housing supply for developments and continuing to grow our construction workforce enabled through initiatives such as our record investment in fee-free and lower-fee TAFE."

As stated by Housing and Works Minister John Carey:

"Our government is rolling out a big, bold, ambitious agenda to accelerate housing supply and these figures show our measures are workingas WA leads the nation on boosting housing supply.

"We are doing everything we can as a State Government to support more Western Australians into secure housing, including backing new home build technologies, funding fee-free construction TAFE courses and cutting red tape in the planning system."
