The Berwick community will soon enjoy a new $4 million wetland that will transform part of Cardinia Creek Parklands North into an environmental wonderland.
Developed by Melbourne Water in collaboration with the City of Casey and Parks Victoria, the project will enhance wildlife habitats through the Cardinia Creek Parklands and provide a shared path linking Berwick's Inglis Road with Buchanan Road.
The project will divert a 630-metre section of stormwater into the new wetlands at the southern reach of Grasmere Creek, which will improve water quality and create habitat where the threatened fish species, Dwarf Galaxia, can thrive.
Construction is already underway, with the City of Casey is contributing 40,000 native plants through its community tree planting program and Parks Victoria is providing the land for the project.
This project is a wonderful example of local and State Governments working together to provide a spectacular recreation space for the Casey community where residents can enjoy activities such as walking, riding and nature pursuits.
At the same time, the new wetland and tree canopy will make this an important site for native plants and animals and deliver important environmental benefits that help to mitigate our impact on the natural environment, ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come.
These works support the delivery of Councils Biodiversity strategy and ambitions of creating a greener municipality that reduces the impacts of a changing climate.
