When Harry Met Maria

Ararat Rural City Council's Community Safety Team is celebrating another successful pet rehoming story, with 12-year-old Maria Taylor a student at St Arnaud Primary School, welcoming her perfect companion, Harry, into her life.

"It was love at first sight," Maria said, recalling the moment she saw Harry's profile on the Pet Rescue website that Council uses to list its cats and dogs available for adoption.

When asked what drew her to Harry, she didn't hesitate: "That handsome face!"

After a long day filled with anticipation, Maria eagerly waited for the school bell to ring so she could collect Harry, who had just been desexed. The moment marked the beginning of a special bond, with Harry becoming Maria's very first dog to call her own.

Harry had already impressed Maria's father, Steve, who knew instantly he would be the perfect addition to their family. Despite strong interest from multiple applicants, it was clear Maria and her family were the ideal match.

The household already includes a Jack Russell, a Border Collie, and two cats. The dogs are well-loved regulars at Steve's auto electrical business, making it likely Harry will quickly become a local favourite.

"The pets aren't animals to us, they are part of our family," said Maria's mum, Georgia.

Maria's passion for animals extends beyond home. She has volunteered at the St Arnaud Veterinary Clinic for the past 12 months and dreams of becoming a veterinarian.

CEO Dr Tim Harrison said Council's Community Safety Team spent a great deal of time rehoming pets that have been unclaimed or surrendered.

"Stories like Maria and Harry's highlight the positive impact of this work, reinforcing Council staff's commitment to finding loving homes for animals in need," said Dr Harrison.
