WHO announces update of Consolidated Guidelines on HIV Testing Services

WHO has made available the membership of the Guidelines Development Group (GDG) for the update of the WHO Consolidated Guidelines on HIV Testing Services (update 2022-24). New evidence and implementation experiences on approaches to increase access to and uptake of HIV testing services have emerged. To this end, WHO's Testing, Prevention and Populations (TPP) unit plans to update the Consolidated Guidelines on HIV testing services. This will feed into a larger process of consolidating guidelines on HIV testing across the Global HIV, Hepatitis and STI Programmes.

The group will meet in a series of virtual meetings, with the first planned for 20–21 November 2022, followed by meetings in February 2023, April 2023 and November 2023. The objective of these meetings will be to provide recommendations and guidance on 4 areas: HIV self-testing, social network approaches, clinical utility of recency testing, multiplex testing and testing strategies and algorithms for CAB-LA.

The objectives for the 2022–2023 update of the Consolidated Guidelines on HIV Testing Services are:

  1. Review and GRADE latest evidence from systematic reviews;
  2. Review resources needs, cost-effectiveness analyses and implementation to support optimization of HIV testing services;
  3. Provide new recommendations to WHO on HIV testing services; and
  4. Inform the consolidated testing guidelines for HIV, Hepatitis and STIs

In line with WHO policy on conflict of interest, members of the public and interested organizations can access the biographies of the GDG members and inform WHO of their views about them. All comments should be sent by email to [email protected] by 4 November 2022.
