Willoughby City Council has resolved to take a proactive role in addressing Sydney's housing supply and affordability crisis by initiating discussions with the NSW and Federal Governments to unlock new housing opportunities in Chatswood.

This must be supported by the infrastructure needed to make it an even better place to live and work.

Council has already created capacity for 6,500 additional dwellings through its new Local Environmental Plan and streamlined its development assessment processes, ensuring it will meet and exceed its five-year housing targets.

However, with demand for homes continuing to outpace supply in Sydney, Council is looking beyond the short term to plan for the next phase of growth.

"Chatswood is one of the most connected centres in Greater Sydney, with Metro, heavy rail and a major bus interchange," said Mayor Tanya Taylor.

"It's a place where high-quality development is viable, but growth must be matched by new parks, recreation facilities, transport upgrades and community amenities. This is about setting the benchmark for density done well."

Council's resolution calls for:

  • Early engagement with the NSW and Federal Governments to explore housing and infrastructure opportunities.
  • Investigation of a landmark new park over the railway corridor north of Chatswood Station.
  • A shared vision for community assets, including open space, active transport links and indoor recreation facilities.

Mayor Taylor said the initiative complements Council's Reimagining Chatswood masterplanning process, which will involve extensive community consultation.

"This is an opportunity to shape a transformative future for Chatswood that delivers homes, jobs and world-class public spaces," said Mayor Taylor. "We invite the NSW and Federal Governments to work with us to make this vision a reality."
