Winchelsea homes damaged by fire

Geelong Crime Investigation Unit detectives are investigating following a suspected suspicious house fire in Winchelsea.

Emergency services were called to the McDonald Drive residence following reports of the blaze in the early hours of this morning just after midnight.

The fire spread to a neighbouring property causing significant damage to both homes.

It is believed the first premises was unoccupied at the time of the fire however four people from the neighbouring home were lucky to escape without injury.

A woman from another home in the street was taken to hospital with suspected smoke inhalation after she tried to assist at the scene.

Detectives have set up a crime scene and it is expected an arson chemist will attend the scene today.
