WMO Unveils Database on Meteorology, Hydrology Laws

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) is pleased to announce the launch of a new database that compiles national laws and decrees governing meteorology and hydrology across all WMO Members.

This resource provides a clear, accessible overview of the legal frameworks that define and reinforce the role of National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs). It also supports stronger, more strategic collaboration among public, private and academic actors in the weather, water and climate ecosystem.

The database is designed to be used alongside the Guidelines for Public-Private Engagement (2024 edition), endorsed by the WMO Executive Council, and contributes directly to WMO Strategic Plan Objective 5.2: Nurture strategic partnerships.

What the database includes

Each entry is organized under four categories:

  • Type of legal instrument
  • Title of legal instrument
  • Link to the legal text
  • Other relevant regulatory frameworks

The platform is currently in read-only mode, it is accessible to anyone with the URL.

This initiative was led by the Public-Private Engagement Office in coordination with the Planning, Foresight and Performance Office, with data validated through the WMO Data Collection Campaign 2025. Please note that not all Members have confirmed information to date.
