Wollongong City Libraries is encouraging families to start their baby's reading journey early with the launch of a new initiative, Baby's First Library Card.
The program invites parents and carers to sign their baby up for their very first library card, with a special incentive to celebrate the milestone. New baby members will receive a free board book to keep when they join, helping families build a home library from the very beginning.
The campaign highlights the importance of early literacy skills for children.
"Early literacy development begins at birth. Simple activities like reading, talking, singing and playing help babies develop speech, language and cognitive skills," said Wollongong City Libraries Manager Jessica Bruce.
"By giving babies their first library card — and their first book to keep — we're supporting local families to build those habits early for the best start in life."
Research shows that children who have books at home are more likely to enjoy reading and achieve stronger literacy outcomes over time. Baby's First Library Card builds on this research by placing books directly into the hands of families while introducing them to the library's early literacy resources.
The campaign also encourages our community to access Wollongong City Libraries' free programs for pre‑walking babies and their carers - Baby Beats and Baby Bookworms – which are specifically designed to support a baby's development and provide opportunities for parents to connect.

"Libraries are welcoming, inclusive spaces for families," said Ms Bruce. "We know that those first few months with a baby can be daunting! Libraries are wonderful, free spaces where new parents can connect with their community and feel supported during the early stages of parenthood."
The Baby's First Library Card initiative will run until April 2027 and is open to parents with babies under 12 months. The free board book offer is available while stocks last and has been generously supported by the Friends of Wollongong City Libraries.
