Wollongong City Libraries is encouraging residents who haven't visited their local library in recent years to rediscover the benefits of a free library card during Library and Information Week (27 July to 2 August).

The invitation comes as more Wollongong residents than ever are discovering the benefits of library membership. More than 8,700 people signed up for a library card in the past financial year, with new memberships more than doubling since 2021-22 as residents seek free access to books, digital resources, programs and welcoming community spaces.

Wollongong City Libraries is joining a statewide push led by the State Library of NSW to encourage more people to take advantage of the many free services available through public libraries.

Lord Mayor of Wollongong Councillor Tania Brown said the strong growth in library membership reflected the important role libraries continue to play in community life.

"Our libraries are welcoming places where people of all ages can learn, connect and discover new opportunities. Whether it's a baby's first library card, a student's study space, free access to eBooks and audiobooks, or opportunities for older residents to learn new skills, our libraries support people through every stage of life.

"It's fantastic to see people recognising the value of their local library. I encourage anyone who hasn't visited in a while to come in, explore what's available and see why libraries remain one of our most valued community services."

Wollongong City Libraries Manager Jessica Bruce said recent initiatives had helped introduce new generations of residents to everything libraries have to offer.

"Earlier this year we launched our Baby's First Library Card initiative to encourage families to begin their child's reading journey from birth. The response has been wonderful, with over 100 babies being signed up for their first library card in the program's first weeks.

"Many people are still surprised to learn that a library card provides access to thousands of free eBooks, audiobooks, magazines and online resources. With the cost of living continuing to impact households, it's a great way to access quality content without another subscription."

From storytimes and family activities to author talks, workshops, exhibitions, local studies resources and technology assistance, Wollongong City Libraries offers a wide range of free programs and services across its seven locations.

This Library and Information Week, the service is also recognising the dedicated library staff who support the community every day, whether it's helping parents access early literacy resources, delivering tech help sessions, maintaining accessible collections, or connecting people with community support services.

If you've not been to a library in a while, now is the perfect time to rediscover what's on offer.
