Woman Remains A Critical Condition With Burns, TAS

A 20 year old woman from the Northern Suburbs outside Hobart remains in a Melbourne hospital today receiving specialist treatment for burns to more than 50 % of her body.  Her condition is critical.  The woman was flown to Melbourne yesterday morning, Tasmania Police say.

A 34 year old Chigwell man was charged late last night with causing grievous bodily harm and three counts of assault and will appear in the Hobart Court of Petty Sessions on Wednesday 26 April 2017.

Police allege the man doused the victim in a flammable liquid and ignited it after or during some dispute.  The dispute is being treated as a family violence incident, although there are no current family violence orders restricting the man and woman from being together.

The family of the young woman will be provided with counselling support and other assistance.

Detective Inspector Craig Joel thanked those members of the local community at Chigwell and elsewhere for providing information to investigators.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.
