Women's UniSport 3x3 Hoops Team Crowned 2025 Champs

The University of Tasmania 3x3 Women's basketball team are the national champions after defeating all rivals to take out the 2025 UniSport title.

The team of four was jubilant after victory against reigning champions Sydney University. The tournament was hosted by Monash University and bought together 50 university teams from across Australia for three days of action.

Team captain Sharna Thompson (Bachelor of Education - Primary) was named Most Valuable Player for the tournament. Niamh Bawle (Bachelor of Psychological Science), Sarah Nyhouse (Bachelor of Biomedicine student) and Emerson Wells (Bachelor of Paramedicine) were the other members of the victorious team. "They were really fast-paced quick games and Sharna was shooting the lights out," Sarah said.

The final day of competition was streamed live and free, allowing fans across the country to tune in. Viewers can revisit the excitement and replay all the medal matches from the final day by visiting UniSportTV.

The win underlines the University's strength in basketball, with the Men's team taking out the UniSport National title in 2024.

As an exciting next step, the team has now qualified for the International University Sports Federation (FISU) Oceania Qualifying Tournament in Auckland in July. There, they will compete for a place at the FISU 3x3 Basketball University World Cup in Abu Dhabi, an opportunity that offers a pathway for Australian university athletes to experience international competition.

3X3 basketball is played on a half-court and the game lasts for 10 minutes, with three players for each team on the court at one time. The first team to 21 points, or whoever has the highest score after 10 minutes, is the winner.
