Compliance, enforcement and monitoring are pivotal to the management of Commonwealth fisheries. The Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA) applies a risk based, intelligence driven approach to targeting its compliance resources in the right areas.
This year AFMA will be targeting the following activities:
- Failing to report interactions with, or, the retention of protected species
- Quota evasion, and
- Bycatch mishandling
AFMA Fisheries Officers will also continue to ensure operators comply with:
- Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) and electronic monitoring (e-monitoring) requirements
- Quota reconciliation requirements
- Fishing area restrictions (closures)
AFMA fisheries officers will also be out and about at Commonwealth ports conducting regular inspections and also provide operators with technical advice and support to ensure they can meet all of their legislative requirements.
AFMA will provide key information and regular updates to operators via the AFMA website, Facebook and SMS. Operators and fishers are encouraged to ensure they ‘like’ and ‘follow’ AFMA and sign up to AFMA News articles and media releases to receive updates.
