Corangamite businesses are being encouraged to repurpose waste instead of throwing it away which will save costs and increase business profits.

Corangamite Shire Council and Sustainability Victoria will run a free "Circular Economy 101" workshop to help local businesses identify new opportunities.

Manager Economy and Prosperity Katy McMahon said primary industries and regional communities were looking for opportunities for cost savings, supply chain resilience and brand innovation.

"A circular economy responds to this by focusing on a way to more sustainably use our finite materials and resources," she said. "This two-hour workshop will explain what the circular economy is and give case studies of leading regional businesses that are thinking outside the box to improve their economic performance."

The workshop will be led by Andrea Pape from Sustainability Victoria, who works with local government, businesses and communities across the Barwon South West region.

Ms Pape said: "We're looking forward to meeting with the Corangamite community to discuss how circularity works, and to sharing the stories of regional innovators who are emerging in this space.

"Waste and pollution are a drag on our economy – it's costly for all of us. When we lose materials to landfill or our natural environment, we lose the chance to create economic value out of those materials.

"There are opportunities for every business to change the way they use and value resources. Circularity is not just good for business - it also builds our resilience and prosperity as a region."
