World Bank Backs Serbia's Tax Reform Initiative

World Bank

WASHINGTON, Aug 1, 2025 - The World Bank has approved the Tax Administration Modernization Project, providing an additional EUR 27.25 million ($30 million equivalent) to Serbia for reforms designed to improve the effectiveness of tax collection and lower the compliance burden for taxpayers.

As part of the project, Serbia's Tax Administration will adopt an Integrated Tax Management System that will allow for a more equitable and transparent tax collection process while enhancing the sustainability of public finance. The project will also introduce several improvements such as a personal e-portal to simplify compliance and provide better insight into tax evasion patterns, reducing face-to-face interactions with tax officers, and lower administrative transaction costs.

"Serbia has made significant progress to transform its Tax Administration into a modern, efficient and taxpayer-friendly institution," said Nicola Pontara, World Bank Country Manager for Serbia. "During the new phase of the project, the Tax Administration will acquire new tools to further streamline tax procedures for citizens and businesses."
