WUR for Christmas holidays: read three great stories from past year

The holidays are a great time to look back on the past year. In 2022, Wageningen University & Research published a lot of news about innovative research, international collaborations and inspiring initiatives. For the Christmas holidays, the editors made a selection of three inspiring articles to end the year with.

In 2022, Wageningen University & Research (WUR) was once again voted the best university by the Keuzegids and WUR again proved to be the greenest university in the world. After eight years board chair Louise O. Fresco left WUR. Sjoukje Heimovaara took over and became the new board chair. The first highlighted article is the interview Dr Ir Heimovaara gave on the theme of this academic year: Living within planetary boundaries.

The 27th edition of the annual United Nations climate summit took place on the African continent, in Egypt. Significant, thought Fulco Ludwig, professor at the Wageningen Institute for Environment and Climate Studies (WIMEK). Indeed, African countries have different needs in the context of climate change. Unlike western countries, African countries mainly want help in coping with the consequences.

Researchers from WUR designed an app that provides farmers with a long-term weather forecast, so they can fine-tune their sowing and harvesting times to the increasingly variable weather conditions.

For five years now, WUR has organized the international Student Challenges: the innovative educational concept that challenges students to find solutions to the great challenges of our time. The student competition will be organized again in 2023. During the ReThink Waste Challenge, students will be challenged to contribute to a future without waste. Find out what makes WUR Student Challenges so special.
