Central Goldfields Shire Council will celebrate and recognise the local volunteers who make our community great as part of National Volunteer Week 2026.
To show our gratitude, all volunteers in the Central Goldfields Shire are invited to our National Volunteer Week thank‑you event on Monday 18 May, 5.30pm at the Maryborough Highland Society.
The event, held in partnership with the Maryborough Volunteer Resource Group, will also provide an opportunity to share an update on the Community Hub Feasibility Study and to engage in a discussion with our young volunteers.
Running from 18–24 May, National Volunteer Week 2026 carries the theme Your Year to Volunteer, recognising the contribution of current volunteers while inviting others to discover the joy and purpose that comes from giving back.
Whether you're supporting your local footy or netball club, lending a hand at the bowling club, pitching in with groups like Zonta, Rotary or Lions, or quietly helping a neighbour, school, kindergarten or church — your contribution matters.
Central Goldfields Shire Mayor Cr Ben Green said the annual event is an important opportunity to acknowledge the people who give so much of themselves.
"I'm incredibly proud of the volunteers across our Shire. They step up in emergencies, run events, support essential services and keep so many local activities going — often without any fanfare.
"We also recognise the families and dependents who support our volunteers behind the scenes, sharing the load so they can give their time to others.
"We know recognising our volunteers is important to our community — that's why we partner with the Maryborough Volunteer Resource Group each year to honour the people who make such a difference.
"This event is our chance to say thank you for the dedication, passion and community spirit that make the Central Goldfields a great place to live.
"The theme for this year's National Volunteer Week, Your Year to Volunteer, celebrates those who already give their time and encourages others to discover the connection, purpose and positive change that volunteering brings.
"In small communities like ours, volunteers are the backbone of clubs, events and local life. Quite simply, we couldn't do without them."
Maryborough Volunteer Resource Centre President Tony Macer said it had been an exciting year of growth and momentum across the local volunteering sector.
"The Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal (FRRR) funding is really kicking in, with the Community Hub Feasibility Study underway, workshops well attended, and expert support being provided for potential community‑building projects by Alistair Shaw.
"We've also made great progress in engaging younger volunteers.
"There is a palpable sense of optimism among our community groups."
This is a ticketed event (free entry) and open to all volunteers in the Central Goldfields Shire community.
