Cessnock City Council Youth Ambassador Emma McLennan will represent our region in a sitting of NSW Youth Parliament on Wednesday 15 July 2026, where she will introduce a bill that she composed on the importance of community facilities.

The Year 11 Cessnock High School student was selected to take part in the program run by YMCA, which develops leadership skills and gives participants a hands-on and behind-the-scenes experience of what it is like to be an elected representative.

Miss McLennan's bill focuses on the importance of 'equitable third spaces' such as youth centres and community centres.

She said she was honoured to represent her community in both the NSW and Federal Youth Parliament as part of the program.

"It's a fantastic opportunity to learn, develop my leadership skills, and make sure young people's voices are heard," said Miss McLennan.

"Perhaps the greatest thing Youth Parliament has shown me is the impact that young people can have when they are given the opportunity to contribute. The passion, dedication, and ideas that I have seen from participants across the state has been truly inspiring. The experiences, skills, and opportunities I've gained so far have already been invaluable.

"I hope my journey encourages other young people to put themselves forward for opportunities like this. You don't have to have all the answers, you just have to be willing to get involved and have your voice heard."

Cessnock City Mayor Dan Watton said it was a thrill to see young people taking an active interest in the issues that matter to them, and work on civic skills that could greatly benefit local communities.

"It's wonderful that Emma and her young colleagues are using their valuable and unique perspectives to contribute to the conversation about what goes on in their communities," said Mayor Watton.

"These young people are the future leaders of our communities, and it is heartening to think those like Emma are actively taking steps to improve their leadership skills and shine a spotlight on the issues that matter to them."
