Zero Barriers Business Excellence Awards 2023 Nominations Open

Georges River Council is calling on the community to nominate local businesses for the 2023 Zero Barriers Business Excellence Awards.

The awards recognise the outstanding commitment of businesses and services that are registered with Zero Barriers, an initiative that removes barriers for people with disability when shopping, using services, or participating in activities in their local communities. Businesses that are eligible for nomination can be found in Zero Barrier's Directory of Inclusive Businesses.

Georges River Council is a proud member of Zero Barriers which works to educate businesses and services about accessibility and inclusion barriers encountered by people with disability. It also supports businesses and services to become more disability-friendly and recognise and promote those committed to eliminating barriers for people with disability.

Mayor Nick Katris said, "Being involved in the Zero Barriers initiative is part of our Disability Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP).

"Council is committed to creating a more inclusive community for all people who live in, work in, and visit our area. This means ensuring all people with disability and diverse needs have every opportunity to fully participate in and enjoy the social, business and community life of Georges River.

"I commend all the businesses in the Georges River area who have already become members of Zero Barriers and I encourage all businesses to join."

Nominations close 19 May 2023 at 5.00pm. Finalists in each category will receive an invitation to the awards night. Winners will be announced at the awards night on 6 June 2023 at The Grand Ballroom, Bankstown Sports Club, Bankstown.

The judging panel will comprise of representatives from the Zero Barriers team, the Multicultural Network, a Council representative, and stakeholders with disability.

The Multicultural Network's vision is to empower and strengthen the multicultural communities of South West Sydney. It is a secular non-profit independent community based and managed organisation that works to support, resource, and advocate for the diverse communities in South West Sydney to bring about positive social change and improve the lives of the most vulnerable.

Businesses and services can self-nominate or be nominated by a customer or client using the Zero Barriers Nomination Form that can be found on Council's People with Disability page.
