Police at Surry Hills have condemned a weekend attack that’s led to the arrest of almost a dozen people outside a fast food restaurant, NSW Police say.
Officers from the Surry Hills Police Area Command arrived at the Oxford Street address around 3am yesterday (Sunday 28 October 2018) to find a group of up to 15 people assaulting a couple on the roadway.
Police tried to stop the trouble when the group allegedly turned on officers.
One constable was allegedly punched in the face whilst another suffered cuts to the face when pushed to the ground.
The two civilian victims were treated for minor facial injuries.
Additional police from the Sydney City, Kings Cross and Police Transport Commands responded to the scene.
Officers deployed OC spray and one man was subdued with a Taser.
Ten men and a woman were arrested and taken to the Surry Police Station where they were charged with offences ranging from assault occasioning actual bodily harm and affray to resist arrest and hinder police.
All but one has been granted conditional bail and ordered to appear before the Downing Centre Local Court on Thursday 22 November.
A 30-year-old man was refused bail and ordered to appear before Central Local Court this morning.
Senior Surry Hills Police have condemned the incident as senseless violence.
"It’s just ridiculous that a 10-minute fight has erupted over a minor altercation, which has ended with several people being hurt and almost a dozen people charged and facing court," Surry Hills Crime Manager, Detective Chief Inspector, Craig Middleton, said.
Surry Hills Police are now examining CCTV coverage of the incident as investigations continue.
