Western Australian community groups and organisations will share in more than $20,000 to promote road safety initiatives through locally based programs and events.
Road Safety Minister Michelle Roberts announced the series of small grants at the launch of National Road Safety Week today.
The grants, totalling $20,889 are funded from the Road Trauma Trust Account and support community involvement in the promotion of road safety messages to the public throughout the year.
The Motorcycle Riders Association of Western Australia will use their grant to host a free educational workshop on correct safety clothing and equipment for motorcyclists and scooter riders.
The Shire of Three Springs is using a grant to fund an event aimed at school children and parents to promote safe travelling to and from school.
The Shire of Narrogin will launch a new Traffic Garden which consists of bike pathways, road line markings, and pedestrian crossings, designed to raise road safety awareness among local children.
Twelve giant crosses are on display at UWA and Forrest Place as a reminder of the 1,200 people killed on Australian roads every year.
The community is asked to make a pledge to use the roads safely by placing a yellow ribbon on the crosses.
State Government and private enterprise will acknowledge Road Safety Week by lighting their buildings yellow, to shine a light on road safety.
As stated by Road Safety Minister Michelle Roberts:
"Road safety really starts with every individual road user at the community level.
"That's why these grants have been chosen to fund programs and events which promote the road safety message at a grassroots, local level.
"The roads belong to all of us and it is only as a community that we can really make them safer."
