Former mayor, Rex Stubbs, will be remembered at the second Dr Rex Stubbs OAM Commemorative History Symposium, to be held at the Deerubbin Centre in Windsor on Saturday 4 February.
The free, fully catered event recognises Councillor Stubbs' commitment to the Hawkesbury community and aims to further interest in its unique history. It is aimed primarily at Hawkesbury historical societies and heritage related groups, as well as those in the region, but interested residents are also welcomed to attend. This year we have several speakers discussing the rich history of the Hawkesbury River from three perspectives: Geological, Aboriginal, and colonial. The speakers are:
- Adjunct Associate Professor Carol Liston AO, talking about the early developments of Yarramundi and Agnes Banks, particularly about the period of Governor Lachlan Macquarie.
- Jasmine Seymour, will be talking about the Dharug language project.
- Robin Woods, talking about the history of wetlands and the local environment in the Hawkesbury since European settlement.
In addition, there will be an update from Council's Arts and Culture team on its projects and opportunity for information sharing by the local historical groups.
Rex Stubbs was a very active member of Council, giving 26 years of service including ten terms as Mayor. He was awarded an Order of Australia Medal in 2001 for service to local government and to the Hawkesbury community. Rex also had an abiding interest in art, history and culture. He championed the development of Hawkesbury Regional Museum and Hawkesbury Regional Gallery and was a member and President of Hawkesbury Historical Society for nearly 30 years.
