Applications are open for the Central Goldfields Shire Youth Council 2024. Council's Youth Team is looking for passionate young people aged between 14 and 23 to represent their peers and the issues that matter to them.

The Central Goldfields Shire Youth Council aims to be a voice for young people across the Central Goldfields region, providing advice and advocating to Council. Applications can be accepted from any young person who lives, works, studies or plays in the Shire.

The program provides valuable opportunities to develop skills and confidence, community leadership, and how to speak up about the topics they care about. It includes training and experience in public speaking, organising events and creating change in the community.

Central Goldfields Shire Councillor Grace La Vella said the Youth Council is an integral part of the Shire's work.

"It really is vital that Council keeps connected with our young people, to help shape and inform our decisions for the whole community.

"I was incredibly impressed both by the diversity and talent of our Youth Council in 2023. I'd be delighted and to see it return bigger and better this year.

"Those in the community who know a young person with a passion, is an up-and-coming leader, or would benefit from the rich experiences Youth Council offers should urge them to apply."

Youth Worker Gemma Simpson said Youth Council is important for the future of Central Goldfields, and a great opportunity for those who take part.

"Even the process of going through the application can be a helpful experience for young people. Practicing interviewing skills, meeting elected representatives, plus connecting with other emerging leaders outside their immediate area has huge benefits.

"These are skills that can help them get a job, apply for scholarships, or learn how to express themselves and communicate in professional settings.

"You never know – we could be helping to build future councillors, members of parliaments, or even a future prime minister!"

Some of the activities undertaken by the Youth Council in 2023 were:

  • conducting a community survey to help advocate for more public transport services,
  • hosting climate conversations in schools,
  • planning and promoting youth events,
  • meeting with local Members of Parliament and the Victorian Governor about local issues affecting young people.

Central Goldfields Shire Youth Council is funded by the Victorian Government's Engage! Program. Applications close 5pm, Thursday 15 February 2024.
