2026 European Horizons Youth Security Conference

The European Horizons Youth Security Conference successfully took place on May 9th, 2026. More than 85 students gathered in Leiden to participate in a day filled with panels, workshops, and discussions on international security.

The event was organized by students on behalf of European Horizons Leiden and focused on current themes such as transnational cooperation, technology and defense, cybersecurity, and security at the borders of Europe.

The day began with a keynote speech by Lieutenant General Rob Bertholee, former Commander of the Royal Netherlands Army and former head of the Dutch Intelligence Service (AIVD). He spoke about leadership in a time where security can no longer be taken for granted. This was followed by three panel discussions featuring experts from defense, diplomacy, government, and the private sector. In addition, students participated in interactive workshops on behavioral analysis, OSINT (Open Source Intelligence), and hybrid intelligence operations.

The goal of the conference was to connect students with professionals from the security field in an accessible way and provide them with insight into current geopolitical and technological developments. Thanks to the support of the Leiden University Fund and Leiden EuropeHub, students were able to organize this conference and offer students a unique learning experience.

European Horizons

European Horizons Leiden Chapter is part of the global European Horizons network. It fosters transatlantic dialogue through education, publishing, and events. It provides students a platform for discussion, research, and skill application beyond the classroom. Since its founding in April 2024, it has rapidly expanded, hosting high-profile events, including a NATO Summit simulation in April 2025. Its three pillars are :

  • Education : offering students a platform to deepen their understanding of transatlantic relations, democracy, and US and EU affairs through workshops, discussions, and guest lectures.
  • Publishing : providing opportunities for students to publish their work on European and transatlantic issues through access to an academic journal: The Review of European and Transatlantic Affairs.
  • Connectivity: fostering transatlantic bonds by connecting students with professionals, policymakers, and peers with similar interests and experience.
