3,000 ACT Social Housing Units Get Energy Upgrades

Dept of Climate Change, Energy, Environment & Water

Around 3,000 ACT social housing residents are now saving on energy bills after receiving energy performance upgrades.

Delivered under the Social Housing Energy Performance Initiative (SHEPI), upgrades to ACT social housing properties include:

  • Electric appliances
  • Ceiling insulation
  • Hot water heat pumps.

Residents are also provided with information and guidance on how to best operate their home as efficiently as possible with the new features.

Together with the ACT Government, we are working towards making ACT homes more comfortable to live. We want to ensure they are equipped to stay cool in summer and warm in the cold Canberra winters.

To date in the ACT, the SHEPI has installed:

  • over 250,000 square meters of insulation
  • more than 700 reverse cycle air conditioners
  • around 1,000 hot water heat pumps.

The upgrades were provided through a joint investment of $35.2 million to reach up to 5,000 ACT social housing properties.

The Australian Government is partnering with all states and territories to provide energy performance upgrades to social housing across Australia.

Nationally, more than 9,500 properties have received energy performance upgrades through SHEPI partnerships, with households saving around $1,800 on their energy bills each year. The expanded SHEPI is investing a total of $800 million in Commonwealth funding. Together with contributions from all states and territories, the SHEPI will provide up to 100,000 social housing properties across Australia with energy performance upgrades and will run until 2029.

In the ACT, the next SHEPI project will maximise the energy performance of the ACT's social housing properties through a $12.9 million project to install rooftop solar and batteries that will be connected to a Virtual Power Plant (VPP).
