$3M Boost for Marron in South West Dams

  • Cook Government investing $3 million to improve South West dam habitats
  • Improvements will support marron breeding at popular recreational fishing sites
  • Part of Cook Government's investment to drive regional tourism and enhance local attractions

Marron fishing in the South West has received a significant boost with the Cook Labor Government committing $3 million to improve marron habitats as part of the 2025-26 State Budget.

New habitats will be installed in the Harvey Dam, Logue Brook Dam and Wellington Dam, providing new environments for marron breeding and recreational fishing opportunities for the unique freshwater crayfish.

The habitats will provide shelter for marron and help improve the underwater ecosystem and breeding conditions.

The funding delivers on an election commitment for outdoor adventure projects that promote Western Australia's unique natural environment, drive regional tourism and support local jobs.

Recreational marron fishing is a highly valued experience exclusive to WA with approximately 10,000 people taking out a recreational marron fishing licence each year.

The season runs for a four-week period across January and February and sees thousands of people travel to the State's South West, providing an economic boost for the local communities.

The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) undertakes annual surveying and marron tagging throughout the South West to monitor populations and ensure stocks are remaining at sustainable levels.

Once installed, researchers will monitor the impact the new habitat has on marron populations.

DPIRD will work with the Water Corporation and Recfishwest on the design and installation of the new habitat for the three dams.

The project is expected to get underway later this year.

As stated by Fisheries Minister Jackie Jarvis:

"Marron fishing is a unique fishing experience enjoyed by thousands of Western Australians each year in our State's South West.

"Improving marron habitats in the Harvey, Logue Brook and Wellington dams will provide new environments for marron breeding, supporting our recreational fishers and the sustainability of this iconic species.

"The Cook Government backs our regional communities, and this investment will enhance the marron fishing experience in the South West - boosting tourism in the region and creating new opportunities for local businesses."

As stated by Collie-Preston MLA Jodie Hanns:

"Wellington Dam is one of Collie's top tourist attractions and fast becoming a must-see sight for all visitors to the region.

"Marroning at the dam is a beloved pastime for locals, the broader South West community and visitors - and this investment will add to the experience during the marron season.

"It builds on the Cook Labor Government's significant investment at Wellington Dam and in local tourism initiatives, which are generating huge economic benefits for Collie."
