The Cook Government has presented a $4.5 million Lotterywest grant to the City of Armadale to support the creation of a vibrant new park under the new elevated Armadale Station.
The grant will enable the city to bring its $14.8 million Central Park project to life, which will transform the public open space into a functional, multi-use park for all ages and abilities.
As part of the METRONET Byford Rail Extension, more than 6,500 square metres of public open space has been unlocked for the community in the heart of Armadale.
The park will include a nature play space, trails, interactive play elements, artwork and various youth zones.
To promote a healthy and active lifestyle for all ages, the park will also feature a skate park, pump and scooter tracks, multi-use courts, entertainment and event spaces and a waterplay area.
Enhancing the sense of belonging within the City of Armadale is a key aim of the project, which will also deliver picnic tables, barbecue areas and shade structures to help bring people together, while also keeping them safe with increased security and lighting features.
The Central Park project will also have a strong emphasis on enhancing green spaces and include improvements and expansion of the area's tree canopy and biodiversity.
The State Government has already contributed $1 million to the project through METRONET, with $4 million committed from the City of Armadale and $5 million from the Federal Government through its Urban Precincts Partnerships Program.
The METRONET Byford Rail Extension project opened in October, delivering a brand-new station in Byford and a new elevated station in Armadale to support one of Perth's fastest-growing residential areas.
By elevating the rail line through sections of Victoria Park, Cannington and Armadale, 14 hectares of public parklands and open space were delivered for local communities.
As stated by Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:
"The METRONET Byford Rail Extension has completely transformed our south-eastern suburbs and is connecting these fast-growing communities like never before.
"The incredible new elevated Armadale Station has opened up valuable public space in the heart of the city, and the WA Government is proud to be supporting the City of Armadale to transform it into a vibrant asset for the community.
"This project is demonstrating how METRONET is reshaping Perth by creating more activated, better-connected communities and unlocking opportunities for development across our suburbs."
As stated by Armadale MLA Dr Tony Buti:
"This is a most welcome multi-million-dollar contribution from Lotterywest that will go towards creating a new community heart for the City of Armadale with a magnificent new park and open space area that will cater for people of all ages and abilities.
"This is another example of how the Cook Government's successful METRONET project is transforming our city by providing a catalyst for community change and an opportunity to generate new life into unused space.
"This new park will enhance a sense of belonging within the City of Armadale with an attractive and appealing zone that includes barbecue areas, picnic tables, a waterplay area and shade structures to bring people together, while also keeping them safe."
