40 New Social Homes Bring Christmas Cheer to Bundaberg

  • The Crisafulli Government is building 40 new social homes in Avoca to deliver more Queenslanders a place to call home.
  • More homes delivered sooner using modular construction bringing the total new social homes to 46 with more vulnerable Queenslanders moving just in time for Christmas.
  • The project is part of the Crisafulli Government's growing housing pipeline with 262 social and affordable homes underway across the region after just 90 social homes were added in a decade under Labor.

The Crisafulli Government is delivering more homes, sooner for vulnerable Queenslanders, with 40 new social homes nearing completion in Bundaberg and residents set to move in before Christmas.

These 46 newly delivered homes in Avoca are part of the Crisafulli Government's plan to secure Queensland's housing foundations, deliver more Queenslanders a place to call home, and turn around Labor's Housing Crisis.

Just 90 social homes were added in the Bundaberg Local Government Area during Labor's entire decade of decline.

The second and final stage of the development delivers 40 one and two-bedroom homes across seven two-storey and two three-storey buildings, providing much needed housing for Queenslanders on the social housing register.

The project builds on six larger family homes completed in April 2025, bringing the total number of new social homes at the site to 46.

Built by Hutchinson Builders at its modular construction facility on the northern Gold Coast, the homes have been transported to Bundaberg and assembled on site.

The project is another example of the Crisafulli Government's commitment to finding practical ways to boost housing supply, particularly in regional Queensland with around 43 per cent of the current social and affordable housing pipeline being delivered outside of South-East Queensland.

More housing supply is being delivered than ever before, including 262 social and affordable homes underway across the Bundaberg region, as the Crisafulli Government works towards its commitment of delivering 53,500 additional social and community homes by 2044.

Minister for Housing and Public Works Sam O'Connor said the project was another sign of the momentum building in Queensland's social housing delivery.

"For 40 of our most vulnerable Queensland households, this will be a Christmas to remember as they move into their new place to call home," Minister O'Connor said.

"We inherited a housing crisis after a decade of Labor failing to build enough homes, and we're working every day to turn that around.

"Labor added an average of just 509 new social homes a year over their decade in government, we're working towards delivering 2,000 social and community homes every year from 2028.

"Instead of relying solely on traditional construction, these beautiful homes were built in a factory on the Gold Coast and trucked to Bundaberg, helping us get more housing options on the ground sooner.

"And by building up to three storeys, we're making better use of our land and creating more opportunities to house vulnerable Queenslanders.

"Astonishingly Labor only added 90 social homes during their decade of decline, in contrast we've got 262 social and affordable homes underway across the Bundaberg region, as part of our record housing construction pipeline.

"There's still a lot of work ahead of us, but we're getting on with delivering the homes Queenslanders deserve after Labor's decade of decline."

Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett said the Crisafulli Government was delivering the housing investment the Bundaberg region had been denied for far too long.

"Labor spent a decade taking the Bundaberg community for granted, adding just 90 social homes in ten years while vulnerable locals were left waiting," Mr Bennett said.

"That's a disgraceful record, and one the local Labor MP should be embarrassed to defend.

"Now we're delivering 46 new homes at this site alone, with another 262 social and affordable homes underway across the region.

"That's the difference between a Labor Government that ignored our community for a decade and a Crisafulli Government that's actually getting on with the job.

"I'm proud to be part of a government that's finally putting Bundaberg back on the map and delivering more places for local families to call home."

Hutchinson Builders Chairman Scott Hutchinson said the completion of the project was a significant milestone for the company's modular construction team.

"We've been building modular projects for the Queensland Government for close to 20 years, and this project shows just how far that capability has come," Mr Hutchinson said.

"Going to three storeys was a big step, and we developed the fire safety solution through our work on schools before bringing that experience into housing.

"That means we can now deliver more homes on the same block of land, which is exactly what Queensland needs.

"Our team has done a fantastic job, and we're proud to be helping deliver more homes for Queenslanders."
