Early works have commenced on the $400 million Canterbury Hospital Redevelopment, with expanded antenatal facilities set to improve access to maternity services for women, babies and families across Sydney's Inner West.
Construction is underway to deliver enhanced and expanded antenatal facilities at Canterbury Hospital, marking a major milestone in delivering the largest upgrade to the hospital in over 26 years.
The early works include the expansion and refurbishment of the existing antenatal unit to provide women and their babies in the local area greater access to these services ahead of the broader redevelopment.
The expanded antenatal facilities will nearly double the size of the existing unit, and will feature new patient areas, including additional ultrasound and consultation rooms,
The existing antenatal unit will continue to operate during construction of the new facilities, with the expanded antenatal unit scheduled to open to the community in 2027.
Building contractor, TCQ Construction is working closely with Health Infrastructure and Sydney Local Health District to minimise impacts for staff, patients, visitors and the community while construction is carried out.
Staff and the community will continue to be updated as work progresses.
The broader redevelopment will include the construction of a new nine-storey building, which will include the new intensive care unit, new inpatient units and other hospital support services.
The Coalition failed to deliver or properly fund major health facilities around NSW, leaving parts of the state missing entire hospitals and health systems under severe pressure. The Minns Labor Government is fixing this by delivering more hospitals and more beds to meet the health needs of growing communities.
The 2026-27 NSW Budget included an additional $50 million investment to fast-track the delivery of enhanced maternity services at the hospital, bringing the total investment for the redevelopment to $400 million.
The Main Works planning application was recently placed on public exhibition, with submissions now being assessed, bringing the project one step closer to planning approval. A separate planning application will take place for the enhanced maternity services, once further planning and consultation has progressed.
Main works construction timeframes will be confirmed following planning approval and the appointment of a contractor.
