Victorian families, tradies and small businesses will pay no more than $50 a week in tolls under an economy boosting plan announced today by Jess Wilson's Liberal and Nationals team.
Under Labor, tolls have only been increased and extended, meaning higher costs for families and small businesses - particularly tradies travelling between multiple jobs on any given day.
To deliver much-needed cost-of-living relief for more than 100,000 Victorian families and small businesses, a future Liberal and Nationals Government will introduce a weekly toll cap of $50 for two years from 1 July 2027.
The toll cap will apply to cars, light commercial vehicles and small business fleets of up to five vehicles. It will be particularly beneficial for tradies driving popular models such as a Toyota HiLux, Ford Ranger or Isuzu D-MAX, which attract higher tolls.
Based on a highly successful model currently operating in New South Wales, motorists will be able to claim a quarterly rebate via Service Victoria.
The toll cap will be the first step in a broader review of tolling arrangements in Victoria to ensure that the system is delivering the best possible outcomes for motorists. Currently, toll notices are legally required to be sent via post - meaning additional administration and other charges which penalise those who can least afford it.
Leader of the Opposition and Shadow Treasurer, Jess Wilson, said: "Our toll cap will cut costs for families, tradies and small businesses and boost our economy.
"By capping tolls for two years, a Liberal and Nationals Government will boost our economy and ensure families have more money to put towards the things that really matter.
"Our $50 a week toll cap is part of my team's Ten Year Economic Plan to lower costs, grow our economy and make Victoria the best place in the nation to do business."
Shadow Minister for Roads and Road Safety, Danny O'Brien, said: "Our toll cap will bring down the cost of the daily commute or school drop-off, make it easier for families to plan their weekly budget and give tradies a massive boost.
"Under Labor, tolls are hurting household budgets, holding back our small businesses and can be the difference between a tradie taking another job or not.
"Only our Liberal and Nationals team has a plan to lower costs for families and businesses, boost productivity and economic activity and restore confidence to our state."
