Binar Futures' new multi-use sporting and community hub in Midland is closer to becoming a reality, supported by a further $6 million funding boost from the Cook Labor Government.
The new funding allocated in the 2026-27 State Budget, builds on a $12.5 million Cook Labor Government election commitment towards the project, as part of its commitment to building stronger, safer and more inclusive communities.
Binar Futures is an Aboriginal-led organisation that engages thousands of young people across metropolitan, regional and remote Western Australia every year through sport, health, education, leadership and cultural programs.
The Binar Community Hub will be located near Moorditj Noongar Community College in Midland and will provide a modern, multi-use facility for students and the wider community.
Once complete, the facility is expected to be used by thousands of students, community groups and people from regional and remote WA, providing a range of spaces designed to support sport and active recreation, cultural education and youth development.
The proposed facility features eight indoor multi-purpose wooden courts for basketball and netball, dormitory-style accommodation for regional and remote participants, a gymnasium, an integrated health and education facility and an Indigenous Hall of Fame.
The project will enable Binar Futures to expand its delivery of programs that promote cultural identity, leadership and community participation among young people across WA.
The Cook Labor Government also supports Binar Future's Indigenous Pathways Program, which engages more than 5,000 Aboriginal and disengaged young people across metropolitan and regional Western Australia through basketball clinics, tournaments, leadership and skills development initiatives.
The program is part of Binar Futures' strong track record in cultural education, youth leadership and community development, enabling the organisation to extend its impact across Midland, the South West, Goldfields, the Kimberley and Great Southern.
This Cook Labor Government investment is part of the PlayOn WA: 2030 by 2030 initiative to deliver 2,030 community infrastructure items across WA by the year 2030.
As stated by Sport and Recreation Minister Rita Saffioti:
"Binar's new sporting and community hub will provide a modern, inclusive space where young people can stay active, build skills, connect to culture and feel supported to reach their full potential.
"The Cook Labor Government is proud to be backing this project, with this investment helping to bring to life a facility that will make a lasting difference for young people and the Midland community.
"We're committed to supporting projects like this right across our State that support participation in sport, improve wellbeing and create stronger, more connected communities."
As stated by Education Minister Sabine Winton:
"When young people have safe, welcoming places to connect, learn and be active outside the classroom, they're more likely to stay engaged in education and build the confidence to succeed.
"This new community hub will be a fantastic facility for students at Moorditj Noongar Community College and the wider community, creating more opportunities for sport and recreation, learning and cultural connection."
As stated by Midland MLA Steve Catania:
"Binar Futures do great work empowering young people and helping them stay connected to their culture and community.
"The Cook Labor Government is proud to be supporting this new multi-use sporting and community hub, that will be an incredible local asset for the young people of Midland and beyond.
"Facilities like these deliver long-lasting benefits for the community and will enable Binar to make an even greater impact on the lives of young Western Australians."
As stated by Binar Futures founder Adam Desmond:
"Binar is an emerging, Aboriginal led organisation that has responded to community need with the Binar Community Hub. We will finally have a home - a safe place for everyone.
"We are grateful for the support of the WA Labor Government and look forward to working with them and our other key stakeholders to make this dream come true."
