New road safety upgrades and improvements will be delivered in Canberra thanks to funding from the Australian and Australian Capital Territory Governments.
ACT Minister for Transport and City Services Chris Steel said the ACT Government would join with the Commonwealth to invest in improved safety on the Territory's road network, supporting the local economy and creating jobs.
"With this funding, the ACT Government will invest in road safety projects to benefit all road users," Minister Steel said.
"The CCTV cameras will provide more real time coverage across our road network. They will be installed at key locations, including busy intersections, across the ACT."
Assistant Minister for Road Safety and Freight Transport Scott Buchholz said road safety was a key priority for the Australian Government and this investment in upgrades would provide a boost to the economy while saving lives and livelihoods.
"Road safety is a shared responsibility and collaboration between communities and all levels of government will help us move towards achieving Vision Zero," Assistant Minister Buchholz said.
"Projects are already underway through the $500 million Targeted Road Safety COVID-19 stimulus package and this additional funding complements that work, resulting in an even greater roll-out of improved infrastructure and roads right across the nation.
"The most important thing we can do for our community is ensure we all get home safely as even one death or one serious injury crash on our roads is one too many.
"Today's announcement continues the Federal Government's infrastructure bonanza for Canberra in, building on the more than $1.3 billion committed on infrastructure projects alone in the ACT in recent years."
The Australian Government's funding for the Road Safety Program is subject to 'use it or lose it' provisions and will provide a welcome boost to local economies.
The 'use it or lose it' provisions require states and territories to use their notionally allocated funds within a given timeframe, or the funds can be reallocated to projects in other jurisdictions.
