A simple act with life-changing impact

City of Swan Assets Works Coordinator Jamie Hogan drives to the local donor centre and rolls up his sleeve to donate plasma every fortnight.

Within an hour, Jamie has responded to emails on his iPad, caught up on the latest sports and helped countless people who need blood products to stay alive or be healthy.

The relatively simple and easy act of donating blood, plasma or platelets often makes an immense difference to people who have cancer, are undergoing medical treatment or need a blood transfusion; something Jamie has experienced first-hand.

"My two-year-old niece passed away from cardiomyopathy while waiting for a heart transplant. She started bleeding and they couldn't find a blood donor," Jamie said.

"It was a very sad time and it certainly motivated me to start donating."

Every blood donation helps save three lives

Jamie's experience is just one of many. The demand for blood is at its highest level in over a decade, with hospitals using more blood than they did compared to the last two years.

If you've donated before, you may have received a phone call from Lifeblood urgently appealing for donors to boost blood supplies.

City of Swan Employee Wellbeing and Injury Management Officer Catherine Burns said every blood donation can help save three lives and every plasma donation can be used in 18 different life-giving ways.

"We can't live without blood, and all of us have some to spare. If we can save lives, why not do it," Catherine said.

Become a bloody legend

After nearly seven years, Jamie is close to making his 100th plasma donation. He encourages everyone who can to take action.

"If you're thinking about donating and you pass the eligibility criteria, I challenge you to give it a go because it's a rewarding experience," he said.

"I should also mention the staff make me feel welcomed and safe, and the free snacks you get afterward make it worth the visit.

"But it goes without saying, the most important aspect is helping others in need."

Each year from July 1 to September 30, the City participates in the Lifeblood Local Government Blood Challenge.

"Many City staff join the challenge because it's a great way to start getting into the habit of donating regularly," Catherine said.

"This year the challenge is open to everyone, including the community, and we encourage you to get involved."
