The Cook Labor Government is progressing the expansion of Acacia Prison by awarding a $238.5 million design and construct contract for the project.
Construction company Sitzler Pty Ltd will deliver three new accommodation units, increasing capacity by 480 beds.
The investment will assist the Cook Labor Government in managing the State's growing prisoner population and improve access to programs.
The project also includes a new support services building for education and allied health services and an industry building for prisoner industries, programs, and services.
Acacia is a privately-operated medium-security facility for adult male prisoners in Wooroloo, approximately 50 kilometres east of Perth.
The facilityoperateswith a strong focus on rehabilitation, supported by a range of prisoner industries and employment programs.
The projectwill provide purposeful accommodation, activities, and amenities with a focus on creating job pathways and connections to community.
The expansion is part of the Department of Justice's Long-Term Custodial Infrastructure Plan 2025-35 with the project expected to be delivered by 2029.
As stated by Corrective Services Minister Dr Tony Buti:
"This investment will contribute to Western Australia's capacity to safely and effectively manage a growing prison population while continuing to prioritise community safety.
"The Acacia Prison expansion is about more than additional beds; it is about providing facilities, programs, and services that support rehabilitation and help reduce reoffending.
"New education, allied health, and industries facilities will provide prisoners with opportunities to develop skills, participate in meaningful activities, and prepare for life beyond custody.
"Strengthening the State's custodial system to meet growing demand will ensure the continued safety and security of staff, prisoners and the community."
