ACOSS strongly condemns the anti-migration rhetoric contained in Opposition Leader Angus Taylor's speech yesterday.
"Language that demonises migrants and singles out people and communities already facing racism and exclusion – including people who escaped war and persecution, has no place in our society," said ACOSS CEO Cassandra Goldie.
"Rhetoric that fuels fear, distrust and discrimination, and jeopardises people's safety and wellbeing must be widely condemned.
"Migrants and refugees make vital contributions to Australia, economically, socially and culturally. Migrant and refugee communities should not be demonised and targeted, particularly by politicians who should be leading by example.
"Right now people in Australia are facing profound cost of living pressures including rising energy and grocery bills, high housing costs and inadequate income support.
"Those with the least deserve tangible policies that deliver real solutions and will improve their wellbeing, not inflammatory rhetoric designed to exploit fear and divide communities."
"ACOSS stands in solidarity with all communities and people who are harmed by discrimination and marginalisation. We will continue to speak out against attempts to scapegoat or vilify any community based on faith, race, culture or identity.
"We continue to call for leaders and communities to foster understanding and strengthen communities.
"We urge the Federal Government to fully implement the National Anti-Racism Framework as recommended by the Australian Human Rights Commission without delay."
