ACT Buses Should Be Getting Better, Not Worse

Australian Greens

As Canberrans on both sides of lake look ahead at years of traffic hell, the Greens say buses need priority over the Commonwealth Bridge to keep our city moving.

Greens Transport spokesperson Andrew Braddock will today seek to amend a Liberal motion to ensure bus priority over the bridge and reduce traffic congestion for all.

"Labor is saying they'll halve the number of buses crossing the lake for two years. The Liberals want to keep the numbers we've got, but how about we actually aim for better and help more people get where they're going with faster buses," Mr Braddock said.

"It's wild that in a climate crisis - where transport pollution is the ACT's biggest emissions challenge - the ACT's bus services are actually getting worse.

"First MyWay+ made it harder to plan your trip and harder to pay for it, and now the government is slashing bus services due to road works on the bridge, instead of making them part of the solution.

"The government is basically telling Canberrans to suck it up and deal with more traffic and fewer buses across the lake. I think we can do better.

"Let's use public transport for what it's intended - to make it easier and faster to get where you need to go."
