The ARC attended the official launch of the ARC Research Hub for Molecular Biosensors at Point-of-Use (MOBIUS) at La Trobe University on 15 August 2025.

MOBIUS is developing biosensors that can be used at the point of need, from mobile sensors that can help emergency workers identify biological threats in the field, to saliva-based devices for diagnosing disease without drawing blood. The aim is to develop affordable and accurate biosensors for use where and when needed, without sacrificing lab-quality results.

ARC Chief Executive Officer, Professor Ute Roessner, said MOBIUS will strengthen Australia's capability to test at the point of need and will empower communities to make informed decisions in areas such as health, agriculture, and biosecurity.

'This kind of research not only improves lives - it also contributes to national productivity, by accelerating innovation, reducing costs and making high-impact tools available at scale,' Professor Roessner said.

Chancellor of La Trobe University The Hon. John Brumby AO speaks at the MOBIUS launch event.

MOBIUS is more than a place for research and innovation. It's a platform for training future leaders, generating new intellectual property, and strengthening Australia's position in emerging technologies. It's also a model for how research can be translated into tools and services that improve lives and support national priorities - the Research Hub already has 20 industry partners, including government organisations like CSIRO and the Department of Defence.

'The ARC remains a proud supporter of initiatives like this, where curiosity, excellence and public purpose come together,' said Professor Roessner.
