The Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Alain Berset, called on Wednesday for joint efforts to strengthen Europe's common legal space, at a time when multilateralism is under pressure.
Ukraine, a priority for Europe
"The belief that peace is built through law and cooperation, as enshrined in the Statute of the Council of Europe, is being severely tested today," said Mr Berset at the Parliament's Foreign Policy Day in Bern. "In Ukraine, Russian aggression is the very antithesis of this," he added.
Speaking to Swiss parliamentarians, he stressed that international law was losing ground. "This breakdown is not inevitable," said Mr Berset, illustrating his point with the outcome of the elections in Serbia, where "democracy prevailed".
