Alawa Community Garden arming Darwinites with sustainable living goals - set to represent NT

Landcare Australia

A sustainable garden showcasing tropical food production and sustainable living education is set to represent the Territory after winning the Australian Community Media Landcare Community Group title at the Northern Territory Landcare Awards.

On a two acre site in Alawa, Lakeside Drive Community Garden regularly hosts workshops and events on permaculture, gardening and sustainability themes.
Basically, LDCG acts as a practical demonstration of design for sustainable living and gardening for self-sufficiency, which can be emulated by people in their own homes.
Locals learn about the reduction of household waste, in an urban environment, sustainable gardening principles and practices including composting, mulching and water-wise designs. They also learn how to grow native species and food plants suitable for the tropics, both in their own backyards and the wider community.
'The LDCG aims to create a thriving, healthy centre for producing food, sharing knowledge and providing inspiration,' said Georgia Glen, Committee Secretary for Lakeside Drive Community Garden.
'The garden aims to provide a welcoming space where all members of the community can come together to share skills and produce. The guiding ethics of the garden purpose is to create a holistic, productive, sustainable community garden and be responsible in the land stewardship for the future.'
LDCG will go on to represent NT while competing for the Australian Community Media Landcare Community Group title at the National Landcare Awards in 2020.
Sue Reid, National Partnerships Manager for Australian Community Media commended the volunteer initiative on their outstanding accomplishments.
'Australian Community Media is proud to celebrate the incredible work of community groups across Australia protecting and preserving our precious and vulnerable local environments,' said Ms Reid.
'A hugely deserved winner, Lakeside Drive Community Garden has significantly contributed to the development of sustainability and environmentally-conscious productivity in the community. Through their tireless work, they've provided inspiration and beneficial well-being and we're incredibly proud to help shine a light on their significant, important efforts.'
