Almost $500,000 awarded for projects to engage SA youth

A new program to address barriers to employment for women and a psychology program to support young people achieve wellbeing and happiness are among 14 projects to share in almost $500,000 in Marshall Liberal Government grants to support South Australian youth.

The projects, run by local councils in partnership with non-government organisations, will support young people aged 12-24 to undertake projects that respond to the impacts of COVID-19.

Minister for Human Services Michelle Lensink said the one-off grants of up to $50,000 each were offered to engage young South Australians in initiatives that help their local community reduce social isolation, improve wellbeing and strengthen inclusion.

"These projects are led by young people for young people right across the state, to help them recover from the effects of the pandemic, but they will also enrich our wider community," said Minister Lensink.

"The grants are part of the Strong Futures: Youth Action Plan 2020-2022, which places young people at the forefront of decision making.

"This year has been tough for many South Australians, so it's wonderful to see young people working with their local councils and communities to lead these important pieces of work.

"These grants have provided an opportunity for young people to be leaders in recovery efforts, working together to address community needs and improve resilience."

The Youth-led Recovery Grants is a partnership between the Department of Human Services and the Local Government Association (LGA).

LGA President Angela Evans said the LGA is pleased to partner with the Department of Human Services to deliver these grants that will support local social and economic recovery.

"Councils are keen to work with all parts of the community on recovery efforts, and it's fantastic to see so many young people from across the state engaged in this program," she said.

"I look forward to seeing these projects implemented and the positive outcomes they will deliver for the community as a whole."
