Today, the Honourable Anita Anand, Minister of Foreign Affairs, met with India's Minister of External Affairs, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, on the margins of the United Nations General Assembly.
Building on nearly 80 years of diplomatic relations and strong people-to-people ties, the ministers welcomed the significant progress made on implementing the Canada-India roadmap, which sets out shared objectives across trade, security, energy, mobility, innovation and defence. The ministers emphasized their commitment to strengthening ties and advancing shared priorities through the continued implementation of the roadmap.
As one of the world's fast-growing and most dynamic economies, Minister Anand noted India's importance as a key partner for Canada. The ministers discussed efforts to advance negotiations for a Canada-India Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).
Minister Anand and Minister Jaishankar agreed that there is significant potential in long-term energy cooperation, including renewable energy, critical minerals and civil nuclear energy, where Canada can be a reliable partner in supporting India's economic growth and energy transition.
The ministers welcomed upcoming high-level engagements between the two countries to further deepen bilateral ties and agreed to remain in close contact.
