The Australian National University (ANU) is welcoming two new external members to its Council, who bring with them decades of experience in law and public service.
The Hon Wayne Martin AC KC and Andrew Metcalfe AO have been appointed from 1 July 2025 to 30 June 2029.
The Hon Wayne Martin AC KC served as Chief Justice of Western Australia for more than 12 years, before stepping down from the role in 2018.
Prior to his appointment as Chief Justice he practiced in all areas of commercial law, including mining, energy, resources and construction.
He also served as Senior Counsel Assisting the Royal Commission into the Collapse of the HIH Group of Insurance Companies between 2001 and 2003.
In addition to his work as a barrister, Mr Martin is the former Lieutenant Governor of Western Australia, former Chairman of the Western Australian Law Reform Commission, and the former President of the Administrative Review Council and Western Australia Bar Association. He has served on numerous boards throughout his career.
In 2012 Mr Martin was appointed a Companion in the General Division of the Order of Australia for his work in legal reform and education.
He will be joined on the Council by Andrew Metcalfe AO.
Mr Metcalfe was a Commonwealth department secretary for 12 years, leading three departments during this time. Between 2014 and January 2020, he was a senior partner in Ernst and Young.
Mr Metcalf served as Secretary of the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, and as Australia's Director of Biosecurity before his retirement in August 2023.
He is the National President of the Institute of Public Administration Australia and was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2012.
He is also an existing member of the University's Audit, Finance and Risk Committee.
ANU Chancellor the Hon Julie Bishop said she is delighted to welcome Mr Martin and Mr Metcalfe to the ANU Council to serve a four-year term.
"They bring exceptional legal, governance, and public service expertise to the University," she said.
"Mr Martin and Mr Metcalfe are highly respected figures with distinguished careers marked by national contributions and leadership in their fields.
"Their extensive experience will further strengthen the already exceptional calibre of the ANU Council, which plays a key role in shaping the strategic direction of Australia's first and only national university.
