Applications Open to Revive Hill End's Historic Core

A once in a generation opportunity is on offer as the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) invites interest in leasing 16 unique buildings in the Hill End Historic Site, near Bathurst.

Through an Expression of Interest (EOI) process, a remarkable collection of heritage spaces is available for lease, including the iconic Royal Hotel and General Store as well as tourist accommodation cottages and even a former hospital. The possibilities are as rich as the town's past. Think boutique stays, cosy cafés and bakeries, art studios and galleries, unique retail spaces, or intimate venues for community events and weddings.

Once home to 8,000 residents at the height of the gold rush, Hill End is now a quiet but captivating destination, where beautifully preserved buildings, an arts scene, and a steady stream of visitors offer the perfect backdrop for a new chapter. Prospective lessees can express interest in one or more of the properties, with the rare opportunity of combining several premises.

The EOI encourages uses that enliven the village and respect the historic character of Hill End. Community benefit will be a key consideration.

Heritage values will continue to be protected through lease conditions, statutory approvals and ongoing oversight by NPWS.

What we are looking for:

  • Strong heritage focus
  • Experience operating hospitality and tourism ventures
  • Plans that benefit locals and visitors, providing a vibrant village and encourage longer visitor stays.

Existing tenants, businesses and community-based organisations are encouraged to apply, with the EOI process giving longer term surety than was previously available.

The Expression of Interest is now open until 10 July at EOI for various properties in Hill End Historic Site.

NPWS Director Blue Mountains Dave Crust said:

"Hill End is a one-of-a-kind heritage precinct that is also a living village. This opportunity provides a rare chance to contribute to the pulse of the community.

"If you've ever dreamed of running a pub, gallery or a BnB in a quaint historic location now is your chance.

"The EOI will ensure heritage is protected while seeing the buildings come to life, enhancing community and visitor needs."
