Appointment of Northern Territory Coroner

NT Government

The Northern Territory Government has today appointed Elisabeth Armitage to the position of Northern Territory Coroner, effective 5 January 2023.

Judge Armitage is presently Acting Coroner, pending the retirement of current Northern Territory Coroner Greg Cavanagh on 4 January 2023, and will continue to preside in that role.

Following her arrival in Darwin in 2002 to take up a position with the Department of Public Prosecutions, Judge Armitage worked as a Senior Crown Prosecutor, and Barrister before being appointed as a Magistrate of the Local Court in 2013; and Acting Coroner in October 2021.

As Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, I commend Judge Armitage on her appointment as Northern Territory Coroner in the knowledge she brings a wealth of experience to the position, and will continue to make a substantial contribution to the administration of justice in the NT.

Judge Cavanagh remains on leave until his retirement, however I take this opportunity to thank him for his diligent service and commitment to the role of NT Coroner over the past 24 years.
