We're delighted to announce that world-renowned diabetes clinician researcher, Professor David O'Neal has joined the Institute.
Professor O'Neal will establish the Diabetes Technologies lab, and he is also providing endocrinology services through our Diabetes Clinic.
A powerhouse in the diabetes space, Professor O'Neal's appointment will enhance our growing profile in diabetes technology research, particularly with regards type 1 diabetes.
Baker Institute Director, Professor John Greenwood says Professor O'Neal already collaborates closely with some of our diabetes experts, including A/Professor Neale Cohen and Professor Alicia Jenkins, and his pioneering work in diabetes technology research will be a fantastic addition to our growing work in this space.
"From AI to pumps, closed loop therapy and beta cell regeneration, diabetes technology is a rapidly evolving field and we're pleased to be at the forefront helping to drive this innovation for people with diabetes," Professor Greenwood says.
Professor O'Neal is the Director and founder of the Diabetes Technology Research Group based at the University of Melbourne, Department of Medicine at St Vincent's Hospital, Melbourne.
He has led multiple studies in novel diabetes technology and closed loop insulin delivery with significant national and international collaborations involving clinicians, academics, and industry and more recently, was the recipient of two National Institute of Health grants.
Professor O'Neal is a Professor with The University of Melbourne, Deputy Director of the Australian Centre for Accelerating Diabetes Innovation and a senior consultant endocrinologist with the Department of Endocrinology at St Vincent's Public Hospital.
He also holds appointments with the University of Melbourne, University of Notre Dame, and the University of Sydney where he is involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
Professor O'Neal is the recipient of multiple awards including the Diabetes Victoria Outstanding contribution to Diabetes award 2019 and the JDRF-Australia Diabetes Research Innovation Award for an established researcher.
