Sustainability and energy efficiency are at the heart of the Wurdi Baierr Aquatic and Recreation Centre, with 490kW of solar panels now installed across the roof to help power the facility.
The centre will operate without on-site usage of fossil fuels, with an airtight building design, lower pool hall ceilings and low-profile glazing also helping to reduce heat loss and energy use. All rainwater will also be retained and reused onsite.
Construction of the centre in north Torquay is now almost 85% complete and remains on track to open in early 2027.
All three pools and the spa are tiled, the splash park is taking shape, and fit-out of the gym, café, sauna and steam room is underway.
The façade and new entry are also nearing completion, with an internal link connecting the centre to the existing Wurdi Baierr Stadium.
The centre is jointly funded by the Victorian Government, the Australian Government and Surf Coast Shire Council.
