Art Installation Greets Visitors at New Campbelltown Library

A spectacular art installation will welcome visitors to the new Campbelltown City Library location on Queen Street as part of a series of works to improve accessibility at the entrance of Downtown Plaza.

The artwork by contemporary artist Lynda Draper is titled 'Shimmer' includes a series of illuminated glass pavers incorporated as part of new pavement being laid at the front of the building.

The glass pavers are custom coloured, cast and shaped puddles that will be scattered through the pathway, creating a light display at the entrance.

"This new artwork will lift the surrounding streetscape and welcome people to the library with a vibrant and colourful display," Mayor Darcy Lound said.

"These works include a series of improvements to the surrounding pavements, pram ramps and in the car park on Milgate Lane to ensure the new library location is easily accessible for the community," Cr Lound said.

Works happening at the Queen Street entrance include:

  • New pavements at the front entrance
  • Extension of the pavement to the existing outdoor dining area
  • Pram ramp improvements
  • Stormwater drainage infrastructure

    Milgate Lane works include:

  • Extension of disabled parking spaces
  • New crossing
  • New footpath

Works on Queen Street will take place at night to ensure minimal disruption to local businesses while works have already begun on Milgate Lane.

About the artist

Lynda Draper is a well-known contemporary artist from the Thirroul (Dharawal Country) and a lifelong arts educator working primarily in the ceramics medium but recently expanding her practice through experimentations with glass that began during her 2024 artist residency at Canberra Glassworks.

Draper headed up the Sydney National Arts School Ceramics Department from 2016 until 2024 and has a survey solo exhibition coming up at Campbelltown Arts Centre opening in December this year.

Draper's art practice explores the intersection between dreams and reality, with a rare and masterful approach to form, materiality and tactility. The Queen Street Library Entrance artwork titled 'Shimmer' will include custom coloured, cast and shaped illuminated glass puddles effortlessly sprinkled onto the pathway.

The artist stated that she 'hopes the artwork will bring a beautiful, gentle, magical moment onto Queen Street for people of all ages to enjoy'.
