Asia Pacific Climate Week 2023 Spurs Action Ahead of COP28

UN Climate Change News, 25 October 2023 - The Asia Pacific Climate Week (APCW) 2023, the fourth event in a series of Regional Climate Weeks this year and the last major UNFCCC meeting before COP28, will be held in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, on from 13 to 17 November 2023.

Anticipating the participation of more than 2,000 attendees from across the region, APCW will host over 250 events. These will gather representatives from local and national governments, Indigenous Peoples, civil society, and the private sector, all coming together to tackle pressing climate challenges and ignite ambition. The events will center around four key thematic tracks, each tailored to deliver region-specific insights to support the global stocktake - the first assessment of global climate action under the Paris Agreement, and set to conclude at the upcoming UN Climate Change Conference COP28.

Countries in the Asia Pacific region are grappling with an array of climate impacts. This year has seen a surge in extreme weather events across the region, from typhoons and hurricanes to droughts and rising sea levels, emphasizing the critical need for coordinated climate action.

Yet, the Asia Pacific region is more than just a place hit by climate challenges; it's also source of climate solutions. With its diverse landscapes, including lush forests, coastal mangroves, and pristine coral reefs, it serves as a natural buffer against climate-related disasters. The region's strong commitment to clean energy, including hydroelectric, wind, and solar power, not only benefits the environment but also creates millions of jobs and attracts substantial investment. This positions the region as a leading force in global clean development.

APCW's four thematic tracks will delve into these opportunities and challenges, specifically in the areas of energy systems and technology; urban and rural development, infrastructure and transportation; land use, oceans, food and water; as well as the socio-economic dimensions, health, and livelihoods. The goal is to provide a platform for policymakers, practitioners, businesses and civil society to exchange on climate solutions and how to overcome the barriers.

APCW is proudly hosted by the Government of the State of Johor in collaboration with the Malaysian government and organized by UN Climate Change, in collaboration with esteemed global partners such as the UN Development Programme, the UN Environment Programme, and the World Bank. Regional partners include the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, the Asian Development Bank, the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies and Global Compact Network Malaysia & Brunei.

APCW 2023 brings this year's series of Regional Climate Weeks to a close, following the Africa Climate Week in Nairobi, Kenya; the Middle East and North Africa Climate Week in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia; and the Latin America and the Caribbean Climate Week in Panama City, Panama. These events have fostered dialogue, knowledge sharing, and partnerships across the regions in the run-up to COP28.
