Attempted murder charge after domestic-related assault at Wollongong

A man will face court today charged with attempted murder following a domestic-related incident at Wollongong overnight.

About 9.20pm (Thursday 24 December 2020), a 63-year-old man was at his Mathews Street home, when he was confronted in the bedroom by a 31-year-old man, known to him.

It's alleged the younger man, armed with a knife, placed the older man in a headlock and cut his throat.

The injured man was able to fight him off and break free before driving himself to Wollongong Hospital where police were notified. His injuries are not considered life-threatening.

Officers from Wollongong Police District commenced inquiries and attended a home on Corrimal Street where the 31-year-old man was arrested.

He was taken to Wollongong Police Station and charged with cause wounding/grievous bodily harm to person with intent to murder (DV).

The man has been refused bail to appear at Wollongong Local Court today (Friday 25 December 2020).

Police are not seeking any other parties in relation to the incident.
