Attempted murder charge at Weipa

A 31-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder in relation to an incident at Weipa in Far North Queensland on May 27.

It will be alleged that at approximately 8.30am on McLeod Drive at Rocky Point, a Toyota Landcruiser was driving dangerously and intentionally drove into the rear of a Mazda 3 several times.

This allegedly caused the Mazda 3 to crash into a power pole.

It will be further alleged that a 31-year-old man, the alleged driver of the Toyota Landcruiser, exited his vehicle and assaulted the 26-year-old female driver of the Mazda.

It will be alleged the man and woman are known to each other.

Police attended and the man allegedly presented to officers while holding a knife, and injured himself.

Officers deployed a taser and he was taken into custody.

The 26-year-old Mission River woman was airlifted to Townsville University Hospital, in a critical condition and her condition is now stable.

An 18-year-old woman and 19-year-old woman, passengers in the Mazda, were transported to Weipa Hospital in stable conditions.

The 31-year-old Mapoon man was transported to Cairns Hospital for treatment.

He appeared before Cairns Magistrates Court on May 29, where he was remanded in custody. His matter is next expected to be heard on July 3.
